Volcanic Activity 3.2

Vocabulary:

Magma Chamber: magma collects in a pocket beneath a volcano.
Pipe: a long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to Earth's surface.
Vent: an opening where molten rock and gas leave the volcano.
Lava Flow: an area covered by lava as it pours out of a vent.
Crater: a bowl-shaped area that may form at the top of a volcano around the volcanoes central vent.
Silicia: material that is formed from the elements oxygen and silicon, is one of the most abundant materials in Earth's crust and mantle.
Pahoehoe: is fast moving, hot lava
Aa: is slow moving, cool lava.
Pyroclastic flow: occurs when an explosive eruption hurls out ash, cinders, and bombs as well as gases.
Active: live volcano that is erupting or showing signs that it might erupt in the near future.
Dormant: sleeping volcano wakens in future and erupts.
Extinct: dead volcano that is unlikely to erupt again.
Hot Spring: forms when underground water is heated by a nearby body of magma, rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool.
Geothermal Energy: a clean, reliable energy source provided by water heated by magma.

Outline:

  • Volcanic Activity
  • How Magma reaches Earth's Surface
    • magma rises
    • volcano erupts
      • during eruption, magma rushes out
  • Inside a volcano
      • magma chamber
      • pipe
      • vent
      • lava flow
      • crater
  • Characteristics of Magma
      • silicia
  • Types of Volcanic Eruptions
      • silicia determines eruption- quiet/explosive
    • quiet eruptions
      • pahoehoe
      • aa
    • explosive eruptions
      • pyroclastic flow
  • Stages of a volcano
      • active
      • dormant
      • extinct
  • Other types of Volcanic Activity
      • hot spring
      • geothermal energy
  • Monitoring Volcanoes
      • easier predict volcano than earthquake
  • Volcano Hazards
      • people living near dormant earthquakes- unaware of danger
